Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are frequent illnesses marked by chronic and recurring gastrointestinal symptoms. These develop as a result of aberrant GI tract function. They are not caused by structural or biochemical abnormalities (tumors or masses). As a result, many conventional medical procedures used to try to identify FGID, such as x-rays, CT scans, blood tests, and endoscopic exams, might produce essentially normal/negative (non-disease) findings. There are over 20 functional GI illnesses that have been recognized. They can attack any region of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, bile duct, and/or intestines. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most prevalent and well-studied FGID, characterized by stomach discomfort and abnormal bowel patterns of diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between the two. Functional dyspepsia (upper abdominal pain or discomfort, sense of fullness, bloating, or nausea), functional vomiting, functional abdominal pain, and functional constipation or diarrhea are all symptoms of functional dyspepsia.
