Communication between the gut and the brain is impacted by functional GI issues. GI symptoms are indicative of a collection of disorders that include motility disturbance, visceral hypersensitivity, altered gut microbiota, altered immunological function, and abnormal central nervous system processing. Conditions where ordinary bodily processes are affected, such as bowel motility, sensitivity of gut nerves, or the way the brain regulates some of these functions, are referred to as "functional" conditions. Nevertheless, no structural issues can be found by an endoscopy, x-ray, or blood test. Therefore, it is based on the characteristics of the symptoms and infrequently, restricted tests when needed.
