The daily job and patient mix in gastroenterology are diverse. Gastroenterologists used to treat everybody who came their way, but due to a change in the training programme, this is no longer the case. Hepatology has already become a distinct speciality from GI due to the additional training required for specialised registrars in this field. Once again, the training programme is being reorganised, giving students the option of studying luminal gastroenterology (functional bowel disease or inflammatory bowel disease, for instance), endoscopy, or academic gastroenterology.Although they won't do endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), or other more technically challenging procedures during upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, luminal gastroenterologists will still receive training in these procedures. The acute medical rota is typically still participated in by gastroenterologists.
