You will be completely unconscious during the procedure if you require general anaesthesia for an ERCP. You will be lying on a table during the procedure while x-rays are taken. Your doctor inserts the endoscope into your mouth. They then transport it down your throat (oesophagus) to your stomach and the duodenum, the first section of your small intestine. The endoscope has no effect on your breathing, and you may even fall asleep during the procedure. If you are uncomfortable, it will most likely be minor. The air used by your doctor to inflate the duodenum, for example, may cause you to feel slightly bloated. You may feel minor discomfort when your doctor injects dye for x-rays.
