ERCP is used by doctors to diagnose and treat problems in the pancreatic and bile ducts. For example, ERCP may be performed if your doctor suspects pancreas or liver disease, or a problem with the bile ducts. You may also have ERCP to determine the cause of abnormal results from a blood test, ultrasound, or CT scan, or to correct a problem discovered during one of these tests. Finally, ERCP can assist your doctor in determining whether you require surgery and, if so, which surgery is best for you. Before the test, a nurse may spray a local anesthetic down your throat. This will numb your throat, preventing you from choking and making you more comfortable. An IV will be used to administer sedative medication to you. If you require general anesthesia for an ERCP, you will be completely unconscious during the procedure. For the procedure, you will be lying on a table while x-rays are taken. The endoscope is inserted into your mouth by your doctor. They then pass it down your throat (esophagus) to your stomach and the duodenum, the first part of your small intestine. Your breathing is unaffected by the endoscope, and you may even fall asleep during the procedure. If you do experience discomfort, it will most likely be minor. For example, the air used by your doctor to inflate the duodenum may cause you to feel slightly bloated. When your doctor injects dye for the x-rays, you may experience minor discomfort.
